LANCE

Lance finished changing out of his clothes from the night before and into some fresh ones that weren’t covered in dirt and blood stains from his busted nose. He headed downstairs with keys and wallet in hand and walked outside to another warm day that saw the full sun shining.

Cheryl and Sophie backed down the driveway in Cheryl’s truck to the main road as he crossed the walkway toward his parked truck. Rusty trotted at his side with his tongue dangling from his maw as if he were going for a ride.

“You’re going to be staying here today, bud,” Lance said as he clicked the key fob and unlocked the doors. “I’ll need you to keep an eye on Carl and make sure that we don’t have any more people trying to do anything on our property.”

Rusty peered up at Lance with his ears perked and head cocked to the side. His tail wagged as he yawned, then licked around his mouth.

The shepherd watched Lance open the driver’s side door and climb into the cab. Lance turned the engine over and studied the gas gauge for fuel levels.

The orange gas light switched on. The needle hovered around empty, which didn’t surprise him. Lance was going to have to add some fuel to the truck if he wanted to make it to the Police station and visit some of the other farms in the area.

Lance shut the truck door and backed down the driveway to the main road, then drove through the gate leading to the farm grounds beyond. While traversing the landscape, his eyes roved the buildings, paddocks, and crops that blanketed the area for any unusual activity. Off in the distance, he spotted Carl on an ATV traveling to the various paddocks to tend to the livestock.

A scowl formed on Lance’s face at the farmhand. He couldn’t help but distrust Carl’s intentions. Although Lance had no proof of deception, his gut told him that Carl was dirty and shady and not to be trusted. Time would tell if Lance was correct or not.

After pulling alongside the pump used to fuel the farm’s machines, Lance killed the engine and hopped out. Rusty was right there waiting for him since he had followed the truck from the main house. Lance added enough fuel to the truck to get around to complete what errands he needed to do, but he didn’t top off the tank. They needed to conserve the gas they had for the farming equipment since that was priority one.

“Keep watch over the farm, bud,” Lance said to Rusty while clicking the gas cap into place. “You have my permission to violently attack and bite any trespassers that cross onto our land.”

Rusty barked, then stood on all fours.

Part of Lance was kidding about the order given to the shepherd. Folks who knew Rusty would be welcomed with a wagging tail and countless licks to the hand, while unfamiliar individuals would receive a much different greeting without any of the family around to temper the guard dog.
